Saskatchewan Workplace First Aid Room Audit Tool

OHS Regulations, 2020 (Part 5, s.5-9) β€” Distant & Isolated Worksites β€” 100+ Workers

πŸ‘‹ Welcome to the First Aid Direct First Aid Room Digital Audit Tool. Use this interactive checklist to conduct your inspection on your device, or click print to generate a perfectly formatted paper log for your compliance records.

*These requirements are based on Part 5 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020, administered by WorkSafe Saskatchewan. A first aid room is required when there are likely to be 100 or more workers at a distant (30 minutes to 2 hours from a medical facility) or isolated (more than 2 hours by surface transport, or normal mode of transport is aircraft) place of employment. The room must be inspected at minimum quarterly (every three months) per CSA Z1220-17.
⚠️ A written First Aid Risk Assessment is required before this checklist can be completed. A competent person must assess your workplace to determine risk level (low, moderate, or high), which determines the number and qualifications of first aid attendants required. Download the WorkSafe Saskatchewan risk assessment template β†’ The assessment must be kept on file at the workplace.
ℹ️ A first aid room does NOT replace distributed CSA-compliant first aid kits throughout the worksite. For worksites with 100+ workers, CSA Z1220-17 kits must still be distributed proportionally across the site so that all workers have access to first aid supplies in their work area. The first aid room is an additional requirement, not a substitute for these kits.

Part A: First Aid Room β€” Physical Condition & Infrastructure

Part B: WorkSafe Saskatchewan Administrative Requirements

Part C: Required Supplies & Equipment in the First Aid Room

C1 β€” CSA Type 3 Intermediate Required Contents (for 100+ Workers)

All first aid rooms at Saskatchewan worksites with 100+ workers require a minimum of CSA Type 3 Intermediate Large supplies. Verify that quantities are present, unexpired, undamaged, and packaging is intact. Replace any soiled, damaged, or compromised items immediately.

C2 β€” Required Additional Supplies for Class B Attendant Services

First aid rooms serving moderate- or high-risk worksites require a Class B attendant and the additional supplies necessary for Class B services. These are required under OHS Regulations, 2020 s.5-11 and s.5-14 β€” supplies must be appropriate to the dangers and commensurate with the attendant's training. Even at low-risk worksites, Class B-level equipment is strongly recommended given the remote location.

C3 β€” Required Room & Transport Equipment (Distant / Isolated Worksites)

All first aid stations at distant and isolated worksites must include the following items in addition to the first aid kit contents. These are explicitly required by OHS Regulations, 2020 s.5-11 for distant and isolated places of employment.

Part D: First Aid Personnel Requirements β€” Select Your Risk Level

Select your worksite risk level to verify attendant requirements:

Risk level is determined by your written first aid risk assessment. Confirm that the required first aid personnel are on duty on every shift when work is in progress.

☝️ Select your worksite risk level above β€” as determined by your WorkSafe Saskatchewan First Aid Risk Assessment β€” to reveal the required first aid personnel checklist.
🟒 Low Risk β€” 100+ Workers
🟑 Moderate Risk β€” 100+ Workers
πŸ”΄ High Risk β€” 100+ Workers

High-Hazard Activities include: Building construction, drilling for gas/oil/minerals, service for gas and oil wells, logging, sawmilling, iron and steel processing and fabrication, road construction/earthwork/tunnelling/trenching, hauling and trucking, mining and smelting, exploration drilling/shaft sinking/quarrying, manufacturing of concrete/brick/clay/cement products, and power line construction and maintenance. Understanding Saskatchewan Workplace First Aid Room Requirements

Under Section 5-9 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020, administered by WorkSafe Saskatchewan, employers operating distant or isolated worksites with 100 or more workers are required to provide and maintain a dedicated first aid room. A "distant" worksite is defined as one that is 30 minutes to 2 hours from a medical facility under normal travel conditions. An "isolated" worksite is more than 2 hours from a medical facility by surface transport, or where the normal mode of transport is aircraft.

The first aid room must be used exclusively for administering first aid, medical examinations, and rest for ill or injured workers. It must be clean, adequately lit, ventilated, and heated, with a permanently installed sink providing hot and cold potable running water and a cot or bed with a moisture-protected mattress. It must be readily accessible and under the charge of a qualified first aid attendant at all times during work.

In addition to the room infrastructure, first aid rooms must be stocked with all supplies required by Part 5 of the OHS Regulations, 2020. This includes, at minimum, a CSA Z1220-17 Type 3 Intermediate first aid kit scaled for 100+ workers, along with a stretcher, wool blankets, and splints for upper and lower limbs as required at all distant and isolated worksites. For moderate- and high-risk worksites, additional Class B attendant supplies are required β€” including a stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, thermometer, emergency oxygen system, bag valve mask resuscitator, and (where spinal injury is a risk) spine boards and cervical collars.

Personnel requirements for first aid rooms with 100+ workers are governed by Table 9 of the OHS Regulations, 2020: low-risk worksites require 2 Γ— Class A attendants; moderate-risk worksites require 2 Γ— Class A and 2 Γ— Class B attendants; and high-risk worksites additionally require a person licensed to practise under The Paramedics Act. All first aid rooms must also maintain a first aid register, post emergency contact information, and be inspected at minimum quarterly per CSA Z1220-17. This audit tool helps Saskatchewan employers at distant and isolated worksites verify full compliance with WorkSafe Saskatchewan's OHS Regulations in a single, structured inspection.
