Manitoba Workplace First Aid Room Audit Tool
Facilities with 100+ Workers — WSH Regulation (Part 5) — CSA Z1220-17 Standard
*These requirements are based on Section 5.10 of the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Regulation (Man. Reg. 217/2006), administered by SafeWork Manitoba. Workplaces meeting the 100-worker threshold must maintain a dedicated first aid room along with appropriate CSA Z1220-17 compliant medical supplies based on a written risk assessment.
Part A: Physical Space & Accessibility Requirements
Part B: Room Equipment & Furnishings
Part C: Select Facility Risk Level for Medical Supply Verification
A facility with 100+ workers must stock the equivalent of four (4) Large First Aid kits. Select your hazard level based on your written risk assessment to verify the bulk medical supplies required inside your First Aid Room.
Part C: Medical Supplies — Low Risk Facility (100+ Workers)
Requirements based on providing 4 x CSA Type 2 Large Kits (or equivalent bulk inventory) for a large low-risk workforce.
Part C: Medical Supplies — Moderate/High Risk Facility (100+ Workers)
Requirements based on providing 4 x CSA Type 3 Large Kits (or equivalent bulk inventory) for a large high-risk workforce.
Understanding Manitoba First Aid Room Requirements
In Manitoba, workplace first aid room requirements are strictly governed by Section 5.10 of the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation (Man. Reg. 217/2006). A dedicated first aid room is a legal requirement for any employer with 100 or more workers present at a workplace at one time. This room cannot be used for multi-purpose activities; it must be used exclusively for administering first aid.
The regulation mandates specific physical features and equipment for the room. It must be well-lit, adequately heated and ventilated, and large enough to comfortably accommodate a stretcher. Permanent plumbing is required, specifically a washbasin with hot and cold running water, as well as a secondary sink or slop sink. A patient bed or cot with a moisture-protected mattress and two pillows, a locking cabinet for supplies, and a communication system must also be present.
Beyond the physical room infrastructure, the facility must house adequate first aid supplies compliant with the CSA Z1220-17 standard. Because the 100-worker threshold triggers the maximum kit allocation (equivalent to up to four large kits), bulk medical supplies corresponding to your facility's hazard level (Type 2 Basic for Low Risk, or Type 3 Intermediate for Moderate/High Risk) must be maintained inside the room. Furthermore, the room must be supervised by a qualified first aider, typically holding an Advanced First Aid certificate (or higher) in industrial or high-risk settings.
