Northwest Territories & Nunavut Compliance FAQ
Are the old Northwest Territories and Nunavut territorial first aid kits still compliant?
No. Effective January 1, 2022, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut officially transitioned to the national CSA Z1220-17 standard. Older territorial kits lack the specific supplies and exact quantities required by the new Type 1, 2, and 3 classifications mandated by the WSCC.
What changed in the January 2022 WSCC first aid update?
The WSCC updated the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations for both territories to adopt the national CSA standards for first aid kits and training. Employers are now legally required to conduct a formal workplace first aid risk assessment to determine the type and size of kit their workplace needs.
Do I legally need to perform a First Aid Risk Assessment in NT and NU?
Yes. Under the updated OHS regulations, employers must conduct and document a workplace first aid risk assessment. This assessment determines whether your workplace risk level requires a Type 2 (Basic) or Type 3 (Intermediate) kit, as well as the required first aid personnel and equipment for your specific location.
What is the difference between a 'Basic' (Type 2) and 'Intermediate' (Type 3) kit?
Type 2 (Basic) kits are designed for Low-Risk environments like offices and retail stores. Type 3 (Intermediate) kits contain additional specialized items, like tourniquets and splinting materials, and are required for Moderate to High-Risk work environments such as construction and resource extraction.
How do I choose the right kit size (Small, Medium, or Large)?
Kit size is based on the number of workers per shift: Small (2-25 workers), Medium (26-50 workers), and Large (51-100 workers). Workplaces with more than 100 workers must distribute multiple kits proportionally across the site.
What kind of first aid kit do I need for a single worker in isolation?
If an employee works alone or in isolation where they do not otherwise have access to a workplace first aid kit, the employer must provide a Type 1: Personal First Aid Kit to ensure immediate access to emergency supplies.
What are the rules for "Isolated" or remote workplaces in NT and NU?
Workplaces located more than 2 hours of surface travel from a medical facility, or sites where the normal mode of transport is aircraft, are classified as "Isolated". In addition to the appropriate CSA kits, these sites typically require supplemental equipment like stretchers, blankets, and specialized splints depending on the number of workers.
Can I reorder individual supplies or refill my existing kit?
Yes. Employers are required to maintain their kits in a clean, dry, and complete condition. We offer complete kit refills and individual replacement items to ensure your kits remain compliant, fully stocked, and within their expiry dates.
How fast is shipping to Yellowknife, Iqaluit, and across the territories?
Orders to major hubs like Yellowknife and Iqaluit typically arrive within 4-8 business days via tracked shipping, though delivery times may vary for specific remote or fly-in communities.
Is free shipping available for Northwest Territories and Nunavut orders?
Yes, we offer free shipping on orders over $250 to most urban areas in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Some remote or fly-in communities may be subject to additional shipping surcharges.
