Newfoundland & Labrador OHS & CSA First Aid Compliance

In Newfoundland and Labrador, workplace safety is governed by the Occupational Health and Safety First Aid Regulations under the OHS Act. As of January 1, 2021, the province fully adopted the CSA Z1220-17 standard. This update replaced the old provincial kit lists with a harmonized national classification system. Are the old Newfoundland #1, #2, or #3 kits still compliant?

No. As of January 1, 2021, Newfoundland and Labrador officially adopted the national CSA Z1220-17 standard. Older provincial kits lack the specific items and mandatory quantities required by the current Type 1, 2, and 3 classifications.

What kind of first aid kit do I need for a single worker in isolation?

According to the NL OHS First Aid Regulations, an employer must provide a Type 1: Personal First Aid Kit to any worker who works in isolation or does not have immediate access to a standard workplace first aid kit.

What are the requirements for company vehicles transporting workers in NL?

Any conveyance used by an employer to transport workers must be equipped with a Type 3: Intermediate first aid kit, sized appropriately for the vehicle's legal seating capacity.

When does a Newfoundland and Labrador employer need to provide a dedicated First Aid Room?

Under provincial regulations, an employer must generally provide and maintain a dedicated First Aid Room supervised by a designated first aid attendant when 200 or more workers are engaged on one shift.
