Are the old WorkSafeBC Level 1, 2, or 3 kits still compliant?
No. As of November 1, 2024, BC legally transitioned to the national CSA Z1220-17 standard. Older provincial kits must be supplemented or replaced to meet the new Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced classifications required by Part 3 of the OHS Regulation.
What exactly changed in the November 2024 BC update?
BC aligned its first aid kit requirements with the national CSA Z1220-17 standard. This replaced the old Level 1, 2, and 3 naming with Personal, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced classifications. It also introduced mandatory BC-specific additions like specific windlass-style tourniquets.
Are these kits WSIB compliant as well?
While WSIB is Ontario-specific, these kits meet the national CSA Z1220-17 standard, which is the benchmark for compliance in both British Columbia and Ontario.
What is the difference between a 'Basic' and 'Intermediate' kit in BC?
Basic kits are for low-to-medium risk environments or smaller workforces. Intermediate kits (formerly Level 2) include specialized supplies for higher-risk environments. In BC, the requirement for an Intermediate kit is triggered by your workplace's hazard rating and travel time to emergency services.
How do I choose the right kit size for my BC business?
Kit size is determined by the maximum number of workers at a workplace per shift. Under WorkSafeBC Schedule 3-A, kits are classified as Small, Medium, or Large to match the headcount of your specific team.
What is a 'Remote' or 'Less Accessible' work site in BC?
In BC, a site is considered "Remote" if it is 30 minutes or more surface travel time from the nearest BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) ambulance station. These sites require higher classification kits and documented emergency transportation plans.
When does a BC employer need to provide a dedicated First Aid Room?
A First Aid Room is generally required for workplaces with a "High" hazard rating and 51+ workers, or "Moderate" hazard sites with 76+ workers. Remote sites have even lower thresholds for this requirement.
