Understanding Nova Scotia First Aid Room Requirements
Nova Scotia workplace first aid is governed by Part 4 of the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations (N.S. Reg. 43/2022). Under Section 4.12, any non-office workplace with 200 or more employees regularly employed on a single shift must provide a dedicated first aid room. The specific requirements for this room are detailed in Section 4.13, which mandates specific furniture, a sink, a bed, a stretcher-accessible entrance, and comprehensive supplies.
Among these supplies, Section 4.13 requires both a portable Medium Type 2 kit and the standalone contents of a Large Type 2 kit. Both of these supply requirements are now governed by the updated CSA Z1220-24 standard, which came into effect on August 1, 2024. In addition to equipping the room, employers must ensure they have the proper number of certified first aiders on shift (which ranges from 3 Intermediate first aiders to 4 Advanced first aiders depending on the distance to emergency medical services) and must maintain distributed Type 2 Basic kits throughout the rest of the facility to ensure rapid access in an emergency.
