In New Brunswick, workplace safety is governed by the First Aid Regulation (2004-130). Effective January 12, 2024, WorkSafeNB officially adopted the CSA Z1220-17 standard. Employers are now legally required to select first aid kits based on the maximum number of employees per shift and the hazard level (High Hazard vs. Not High Hazard) of the work environment.
Requirement Matrix: Find Your NB Kit
| Hazard Level | 1 Worker (Working Alone) | 2 β 25 Workers | 26 β 50 Workers | 51 β 100 Workers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not High Hazard (e.g., Office, Retail) | Type 1: Personal Kit | Type 2: Basic (Small) | Type 2: Basic (Medium) | Type 2: Basic (Large) |
| High Hazard (e.g., Const., Forestry) | Type 1: Personal Kit | Type 3: Intermediate (Small) | Type 3: Intermediate (Medium) | Type 3: Intermediate (Large) |
*Workplaces with more than 100 workers per shift must provide additional kits in proportion to the total number of workers as per Schedule A of the Regulation.
New Brunswick Compliance FAQ
What are the legal requirements for first aid kits in New Brunswick?
Under the New Brunswick First Aid Regulation (2004-130), employers must provide first aid kits that comply with the CSA Z1220-17 standard. The required kit type (1, 2, or 3) and size are determined by the hazard level and the maximum number of employees on a shift.
What changed in the January 2024 New Brunswick update?
New Brunswick updated its regulations to harmonize with the national CSA Z1220-17 standard for kits and Z1210-17 for training. This replaced the old provincial kit lists with the Type 1, 2, and 3 classifications used across Canada.
What is considered "High Hazard work" in New Brunswick?
WorkSafeNB defines high hazard work to include project sites, mines, woodland operations (sawmills), foundries, machine shops, electrical transmission, gas/chemical processing plants, and work with explosives or heavy equipment.
When is a Type 3 (Intermediate) kit required in NB?
A Type 3 (Intermediate) kit is mandatory for any workplace classified as "High Hazard" with 2 or more workers present. These kits contain additional supplies to manage more severe injuries common in industrial environments.
What is required for workers who work alone or in isolation?
Employers must provide a Type 1: Personal first aid kit to any employee who works alone or in an isolated area where they do not have immediate access to a central workplace kit.
When does an NB employer need to provide a First Aid Room?
According to Section 12 of the regulation, a dedicated first aid room is required for any workplace with 100 or more employees present during a shift.
How often should I inspect my first aid kits in New Brunswick?
Kits must be inspected at least once every 90 days (quarterly) or after any use. Employers must ensure the kits remain clean, dry, and fully stocked with items that are within their expiry dates.
Are these kits latex-free?
Yes. Current CSA and WorkSafeNB requirements mandate that all gloves and bandages in first aid kits be latex-free to ensure the safety of all employees and responders.
How fast is shipping to Moncton, Saint John, and Fredericton?
