Nova Scotia Compliance FAQ
Are the old Nova Scotia provincial first aid kits still compliant?
No. As of June 13, 2022, Nova Scotia legally transitioned to the national CSA Z1220 standard. Employers were given a one-year grace period to update their supplies, meaning older provincial kits are no longer compliant and must be replaced or upgraded to meet Type 1, 2, or 3 requirements.
What exactly changed in the Nova Scotia OHS first aid update?
The province updated Part 4 of the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations to adopt the national CSA standards for both first aid kits and training. This replaced old provincial lists with a harmonized system, meaning employers must now select Type 1, 2, or 3 kits based on their specific workplace hazard level and the number of workers per shift.
What is the difference between a 'Basic' (Type 2) and 'Intermediate' (Type 3) kit?
Type 2 (Basic) kits are designed for low-risk environments like offices, retail stores, and light commercial spaces. Type 3 (Intermediate) kits contain additional specialized supplies, such as tourniquets and pressure dressings, and are required for higher-risk environments like construction, industrial, or manufacturing sites.
How do I choose the right kit size (Small, Medium, or Large)?
Kit size is based on the number of workers per shift: Small (2-25 workers), Medium (26-50 workers), and Large (51-100 workers). Workplaces with more than 100 workers must distribute multiple kits proportionally across the site.
What kind of first aid kit is required for company vehicles in Nova Scotia?
Under Nova Scotia regulations, any vehicle used regularly for work purposes is considered a workplace. Employers must equip these vehicles with at least a Type 1: Personal First Aid Kit, along with a CPR barrier device, for employees travelling for work.
When does a Nova Scotia employer need to provide a dedicated First Aid Room?
According to the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations, an employer must provide a dedicated First Aid Room if the workplace is not an office and has 200 or more regularly employed workers on any single shift.
Can multiple employers at the same worksite share first aid kits?
Yes. If a Nova Scotia workplace has several employers represented onsite at once, they can enter into a written agreement to collectively supply first aid kits and services. A copy of this agreement must be kept on site.
Can I reorder individual supplies or refill my existing kit?
Yes. Employers are required to inspect kits at least monthly. We offer complete kit refills and individual replacement items to ensure your kits remain compliant, fully stocked, and within their expiry dates.
How fast is shipping to Halifax and across Nova Scotia?
Orders to major hubs like Halifax or Dartmouth typically arrive within 2-4 business days via tracked shipping, with slightly longer transit times for rural parts of the province.
Is free shipping available for Nova Scotia orders?
Yes, we offer free shipping on orders over $250 to most urban areas in Nova Scotia.
