Understanding Alberta Workplace First Aid Room Requirements
Alberta workplace first aid rooms are governed by Part 11 of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code and Schedule 2, Table 4. A first aid room is required when: medium hazard work sites employ 200 or more workers per shift, or high hazard work sites employ 100 or more workers per shift (Schedule 2, Tables 6–7). These thresholds apply to close work sites (within 20 minutes of a medical facility); more stringent requirements apply to distant or isolated sites.
The first aid room must meet specific physical requirements set out in Schedule 2, Table 4: it must be located near the work area, easily accessible, large enough to accommodate a stretcher, adjacent to washroom facilities, kept clean and sanitary, provided with adequate lighting and ventilation, designated as non-smoking, and used exclusively for first aid or health-related services. A permanently installed sink with hot and cold potable running water is mandatory, as is a working communication system. Oxygen equipment — including a compressed oxygen cylinder, pressure regulator, gauge, flow meter, and delivery equipment — is also a specific Table 4 requirement and must be present and maintained in all Alberta first aid rooms.
Work sites requiring a first aid room must have an advanced first aider present on every shift. Under the current OHS Code (effective March 31, 2023), this means an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), Registered Nurse (RN), or a person holding a valid certificate in Advanced First Aid from an Alberta-approved training agency compliant with CSA Standard Z1210-17. The advanced first aider must be based at or near the first aid room. The first aid room must be stocked with a CSA Z1220-17 Type 3 (Intermediate) first aid kit sized for the shift — small (2–25 workers), medium (26–50 workers), or large (51–100 workers). Type 3 kits include items not found in Type 2 kits, such as a tourniquet, instant cold packs, glucose tablets, eye dressing sets, elastic compression bandages, larger compress dressings, non-adherent wound dressings, and a padded malleable splint.
