Prince Edward Island First Aid Room Compliance FAQ

Which businesses are required to have a First Aid Room in Prince Edward Island?

Under Section 9.14 of the PEI OHS General Regulations, an employer must provide a dedicated First Aid Room if there are more than 100 workers regularly employed on any one shift, provided the work being conducted goes beyond "low risk" work (or is a mix of low and moderate/high risk).

What are the physical facility and furnishing requirements for a PEI First Aid Room?

The room must be kept clean, have adequate lighting, heating, and emergency ventilation, and be large enough to accommodate a stretcher. It must contain a permanently installed sink with hot and cold running water, a bed or cot with a moisture-protected mattress and two pillows, and a treatment chair with armrests. It must be accessible at all times during a shift and used exclusively for first aid.

What supplies and equipment are required inside a PEI First Aid Room?

In addition to room furnishings, PEI explicitly requires specific sanitary and diagnostic tools: a stainless steel or polypropylene wash basin and kidney basin, a nail brush, a flashlight, hand soap, paper towels, and paper cups. The room must also contain a complete Large CSA Z1220-17 Type 3 Intermediate First Aid Kit to address advanced trauma needs.

Who must be in charge of a PEI First Aid Room?

The room must be managed by designated workplace first aiders. Because a First Aid Room is triggered by high headcounts and elevated hazard levels, the assigned first aiders must hold valid training certificates appropriate to the workplace's risk assessment (which for high-risk sites with 100+ workers typically requires Intermediate or Advanced First Aid certification as per CSA Z1210-17 standards).

Can I reorder individual supplies to restock my First Aid Room?

Yes. We offer individual replacement items—from CSA-compliant trauma supplies to registers, basins, and signage—to ensure your Prince Edward Island First Aid Room remains fully compliant and ready for emergency response at all times.
