BC WorkSafeBC First Aid Rooms
Larger workforces and higher-hazard environments require more comprehensive medical readiness. Employers are responsible for ensuring their workplace has the required facilities to treat injured workers. A dedicated First Aid Room requires a significantly larger footprint and more extensive specialized supplies than a standard dressing station to meet WorkSafeBC regulations.

First Aid Room Compliance FAQ
Which businesses are required to have a First Aid Room in BC?
Under the updated WorkSafeBC Schedule 3-A (effective November 2024), the requirement for a First Aid Room depends on your workplace hazard rating, the number of workers per shift, and site accessibility. Assuming you operate a standard "Class 1" workplace (readily accessible and less than 30 minutes from an ambulance station), a dedicated First Aid Room is legally required if you have:
- Low Hazard rating: 200 or more workers per shift.
- Moderate Hazard rating: 100 or more workers per shift.
- High Hazard rating: 51 or more workers per shift.
If your worksite is considered "remote" or "less accessible" (Classes 2, 3, or 4), these worker thresholds may differ, and you will also be required to factor in emergency transportation.
What are the physical facility requirements for a First Aid Room?
Because of the advanced level of care provided, a First Aid Room requires a significantly larger footprint than a dressing station. It must be at least 9.3 square metres (100 sq. ft.) in size. The room must have adequate storage cupboards, counter space, a sink with hot and cold running water (or potable water), and have a toilet facility inside or located as near as practicable. It must be kept clean, dry, well-lit, ventilated, and heated/cooled.
How do travel time and site accessibility affect my First Aid Room requirements?
Under the new regulations, requirements are no longer based on a 20-minute travel time to a hospital. Instead, your workplace falls into one of four classes based on "remoteness" (whether you are more than 30 minutes of surface travel time from the nearest BC ambulance station) and "accessibility" (whether an ambulance can easily reach the site). If your site triggers either of these conditions, you will need a higher level of first aid kits, emergency transportation readiness, and facilities for fewer workers.
What should be done if our main first aid kits are not near the First Aid Room?
Where first aid kits are not readily accessible to the first aid room, additional PPE for first aid attendants and an additional CPR pocket mask with one-way valve must be provided in the first aid room itself.
Where can I view the complete WorkSafeBC lists and guidelines?
For the full, detailed breakdown directly from the source, you can review the official document: WorkSafeBC First Aid Equipment, Supplies, and Facilities (PDF).
Can I reorder individual supplies to restock my First Aid Room?
Yes. We offer individual replacement items to ensure your First Aid Room remains fully compliant, sterile, and ready for use at all times.
