Ontario First Aid Room Compliance FAQ

Which businesses are required to have a First Aid Room in Ontario?

Under WSIB Regulation 1101, any employer employing 200 or more workers in any one shift at a place of employment must legally provide and maintain a dedicated First Aid Room.

What are the physical facility and furnishing requirements for an Ontario First Aid Room?

A WSIB-compliant First Aid Room must be equipped with hot and cold running water, 3 washbasins (preferably stainless steel), 1 instrument sterilizer, 1 cabinet for surgical dressings, 1 enamel foot bath, a sanitary disposal receptacle with a lid, a couch curtained off or in a separate cubicle, 1 stretcher, and 2 blankets.

What supplies and instruments are required in an Ontario First Aid Room?

In addition to the furnishings, the room must have a standard First Aid Manual, denatured ethyl alcohol, various instruments (dressing scissors, forceps, safety pins, graduated medicine glass, tongue depressors, cotton-tipped applicators), and a well-stocked assortment of dressings (adhesive dressings, sterile gauze pads, gauze bandages, adhesive plaster, absorbent cotton, triangular bandages, splints, and splint padding).

Are there any portable kit requirements associated with the First Aid Room?

Yes. Regulation 1101 requires that the First Aid Room contain at least one portable first aid box (equivalent to the Section 9 kit required for 6-15 workers). This is specifically for the attendant to carry to the scene of an accident to treat the patient before they are moved to the First Aid Room or a general hospital.

Who must be in charge of an Ontario First Aid Room?

The employer must ensure the First Aid Room is under the charge of a registered nurse, or a worker holding a valid Standard First Aid Certificate (or equivalent). This certified worker must work in the immediate vicinity of the first aid room and must not perform other work that would adversely affect their ability to administer first aid promptly.

Can I reorder individual supplies to restock my First Aid Room?

Yes. We offer individual replacement items to ensure your Ontario First Aid Room remains fully compliant, stocked, and ready for WSIB inspections at all times.
