Newfoundland and Labrador First Aid Room Compliance FAQ
Which businesses are required to have a First Aid Room in Newfoundland and Labrador?
Under Section 5(1) of the NL OHS First Aid Regulations, an employer must provide and maintain a dedicated First Aid Room if they employ 200 or more workers on one shift, or if explicitly ordered to do so by an OHS officer due to high workplace hazards.
What are the physical facility and furnishing requirements for a Newfoundland First Aid Room?
Newfoundland and Labrador has very strict physical requirements. The room must have a minimum floor dimension of 2.5 metres by 3.7 metres and an entrance large enough for a stretcher. It must be equipped with a permanent sink (knee/elbow controls preferred), a treatment chair with armrests, and a bed covered with a plastic sheet (along with pillows, sheets, and blankets).
What supplies and equipment are required inside a Newfoundland First Aid Room?
In addition to the physical furnishings, the room requires specialized diagnostic and cleaning tools not found in standard kits, including an eye lamp, a cold sterilizer with germicidal solution, two wash basins, a kidney basin, and specific surgical scissors and forceps. The room must also contain a complete Large CSA Z1220-17 Type 3 Intermediate First Aid Kit to cover advanced trauma needs.
Who must be in charge of a Newfoundland First Aid Room?
The First Aid Room must be under the direct supervision of an appointed "first aid attendant." Under the regulations, this means a person who holds a valid advanced first aid certificate (or higher health care treatment credentials). They must be situated in a position to be readily available in case of an accident.
Can I reorder individual supplies to restock my First Aid Room?
Yes. We offer individual replacement items—from CSA-compliant trauma supplies to specialized items like eye lamps, sterilizers, and registers—to ensure your Newfoundland and Labrador First Aid Room remains fully compliant and ready for emergency response at all times.
